On the 12th January Mark Zuckerberg made the world aware that Facebook is to change how its news feed works, making posts from businesses, brands and media less prominent.
At Hellomint we are always keeping an eye on the world of social media and looking at how our clients will interact with their customers, so it’s no surprise that Facebook has made this move, Mister Zuckerberg has had this on the cards for at least a year.
While Facebook has held a healthy position for key brands and small business owners, we have always advised that a widespread use of the marketing tools available should be used by our clients and this allows for connection and interaction on many levels.
The vision Mark Zuckerman had for Facebook developed and diversified and ultimately moved away from his core desires and with the shift in target age and the use of brands, his decision to bring it back and not allow the ‘biggies’ to gain free/cheap targeting will bring it back to the original hope of personal interaction, connection and personal social gain.
The key premise is that feedback from the Facebook community is ‘posts from businesses, brands and media — is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other.’
From hellomint’s perspective, it will shift for many, from just business to more personal social interaction and a change in newsfeed from content blasting to more meaningful social interaction.
Adam Mosseri, the Head of Newsfeed at Facebook states that “Over the next few months, we’ll be making updates to ranking so people have more opportunities to interact with the people they care about” and from the Facebook newsroom “Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we’ll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses.”
If you are totally reliant on a Facebook business page you need to start planning ahead for a drop in reach, our advice is never to rely on one source of revenue in your marketing and also the statement ‘you don’t need a website’ is never in our mantra.
As always, hellomint look to the future of our clients and offer a full range of services from marketing strategy and social media to PR and website design.
Give us a call and we can advise you on the best marketing strategy for your business that will give you sustainability and reach while using all the marketing tools available to grow and sustain a successful business.
