This week were reminded of just how important it is to make sure that your social media accounts are as secure as possible. One of our clients had their Facebook page maliciously hacked. All of the page’s administrators were deleted as someone attempted to gain sole control of the page.

The hacked client has a very large Facebook presence with a lot of influence, having over 120,000 likes. It was also a page that the company had invested a lot of money in, spending over £500,000 on the page’s promotion. The bigger the Facebook page the bigger the target for online hackers – so protection measures are extremely important.

Thankfully the hellomint team managed to recover the account and get it back under control. Having your account hacked can be not only damaging, but also embarrassing for a company. One of the best things to do to ensure your social media pages remain secure is to limit the number of admins as much as possible. People can be added as editors instead of admins, this gives them the power to edit and make generic posts – but not to have the same level of control as administrators. There are also more secure ways to protect password entry, such as a 2-step authentication option and log in approvals that require you to enter a code sent to you by text.

Here at hellomint we are social media experts and we offer help and support with all aspects of managing your accounts, including security. If you would like to find out more about what kind of services we can offer you, email us at: info.hellomint.co.uk
